Escort PA Cross is a play-action pass out of Pistol Doubles Y Off that sells run action to the boundary while attacking the middle of the field with a deep crosser. Off the play fake, the crosser works from the backside all the way across the formation, the outside receiver on that side runs a corner route stem vertically upfield, and the frontside receiver clears out with a deep out breaking to the sideline while the underneath receiver runs a shallow drag toward the flat. This is a man beater at its core since the crosser creates natural separation against man leverage, and the read progression starts with the deep crosser working across the field before checking down to the shallow drag or working the corner route on the backside if the defense sinks to take away the middle.
Man coverage with linebackers matched up on the crosser is the biggest weakness this play exploits, especially against Cover 1 or Cover 3 man variants. Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the shallow middle zone, since this play design is vulnerable if a linebacker or safety reads the quarterback's eyes and jumps the crossing route. Cover 2 or Cover 4 zone shells with safeties staying deep can bracket the corner route and force the quarterback to check down to the shallow drag underneath. Pre-snap, look at safety depth and cornerback alignment, if the corner presses the outside receiver running the corner route it signals man coverage and confirms the crosser will have room to work. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can disrupt the play-action timing, so identify overload blitz looks and be ready to hot route protection or check to the quick shallow drag as a hot read.
Use pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is in man or zone before the snap, since a defender following the motion man across the formation confirms man coverage and tells you the crosser will win.
Sell the play-action fake fully by holding the ball on the fake for a beat, this freezes linebackers and opens up the throwing lane for the deep crosser.
Pair this play with HB Zone or HB Dive from the same set to keep defenses honest on early downs, then dial up Escort PA Cross once the defense starts crashing downhill on run fits.
Best used on first or second down when the defense is anticipating run based on personnel grouping and formation tendencies.
If the defense shows soft zone or two high safeties pre-snap, hot route the corner route into a deep dig or bench route to attack the seam instead of forcing the crosser into a crowded zone.
