Tech Out is a quick-hitting pass concept out of Pistol Doubles Y Off with 11 personnel, designed to attack the flat and sideline in a hurry. The X receiver runs a quick out breaking hard to the boundary, the slot Y runs an out and up (sit and climb vertical after the out fake) to hold the corner and safety, and the backside receiver runs a whip route out of the backfield area that curls back toward the sideline after releasing outside. The RB releases on a shallow drag/flat route underneath, giving the quarterback a layered progression from outside in. This is primarily a man beater, using the whip and out and up combo to create leverage and separation against tight man coverage, with the quick out to the boundary WR as the immediate rhythm throw against soft corners.
Defensive Reads
Read the flat defender first since the RB release and the boundary out route both attack that same landmark, forcing a conflict for zone defenders in Cover 3 or Cover 4. Watch the slot corner or nickel technique on the Y receiver, if he sits on the out portion of the route he will get beat by the up phase, so trail technique or strong safety help over the top is what shuts this down. Check linebacker depth before the snap, shallow linebackers can jump the RB's underasing route and blow up the easy checkdown, so know your outlet before you throw into a crowded box. Man coverage with no safety help over the slot is where this play wins most consistently, since the whip and out and up combo creates natural separation against trail or press technique. Beware of Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with corners sinking into the flat, since that eliminates the boundary out route as a first read and forces you to work the whip route or hold for the vertical stem on the Y.
Usage Tips
Use this on 3rd and short to medium since the quick out and RB flat route give you rhythm timing throws that live outside the numbers before pressure arrives.
Pre-snap, identify if the corner over the boundary X is playing off or bail technique, since that tells you whether the quick out is there immediately or if you need to work the whip route on the opposite side.
Against man coverage, prioritize the out and up route from the slot Y since it is designed to sit down and then climb vertical once the defender commits, creating a natural rub against trail technique.
If you see a Cover 2 shell with corners sitting on the flat, hot route the RB into a stick or hitch to give yourself a checkdown that beats the underneath zone defender.
Pair this play with HB Dive or HB Zone from the same set to keep linebackers honest on run fits, then come back to Tech Out once you have shown enough run action to slow down flat defenders.
