Breakdown

Tech Out lines up out of Pistol Doubles Y Off with three receivers to the boundary side and an isolated receiver running a lone route to the field. On the left side, the outside receiver runs an out breaking route, the Y (slot) runs a corner route out of the stack, and the HB releases out of the backfield on a flat route underneath. To the field side, the isolated X receiver runs a deep out that stems vertically before breaking hard to the sideline. This is a man beater built on route spacing, with the primary read starting on the field side isolated out route against man coverage before working back to the corner and flat combo on the boundary side.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage with outside leverage on the isolated receiver is the biggest liability, the deep out will separate quickly on the break. Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, he can undercut the corner route from the Y if the quarterback stares it down too long. Cover 3 zone defenders sinking hard on the boundary side can take away the corner route, forcing the quarterback to check down to the HB flat route. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge threaten the quarterback's timing before the isolated out route to the field can develop, so watch for overload blitzes pre-snap. Press man corners who mirror the release on the isolated receiver can disrupt the timing of the deep out and force an incompletion or checkdown.

Usage Tips

Check the cornerback alignment on the isolated receiver before the snap, if he is playing outside leverage in man coverage the deep out to the field side will be wide open on the break.

Use the flat route from the HB as your checkdown against blitz looks or when the corner route gets jumped by an underneath zone defender.

This play pairs well with Four Verticals and PA Deep In from the same set since both attack similar horizontal stretches and keep the defense guessing between quick outs and vertical shots.

Best called on second and medium to second and long where the out breaking routes give you a high percentage completion without needing to test a tight window down the field.

Motion the HB into the flat route timing manually if you want to bait linebackers into flowing wrong before the throw.
