Breakdown

Read Option lines up out of Pistol with 11 personnel, showing a lone back offset behind the QB and the offensive line blocking down toward the play side while the QB reads the edge defender on the give or keep decision. The play diagram shows a simple zone run scheme with the QB stepping laterally off the mesh point, reading the unblocked end man on the line, then either handing off or pulling the ball to attack the perimeter himself. This is a pure run play designed to attack the edge of the defense, not a play-action or RPO look, and the primary read progression is the QB keying the edge defender to decide between the dive and the keep.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the play side defensive end or OLB alignment, if he is crashed inside expect the QB to pull and attack the edge. Watch linebacker depth and gap fits, fast flowing linebackers can be baited by the mesh point but also close down the keep lane quickly if disciplined. This run concept struggles against disciplined scrape exchange defense where the end stays home on the QB and the linebacker flows to the dive. Man coverage on the backend does not directly stop this since it is a run play, but a hard crashing safety from a run blitz or force player set to the play side can blow up the read before the QB commits. Zone shells with light boxes are the most vulnerable to this concept, if the defense is in a two high shell with only six in the box the QB should look to pull and get to the edge for a big gain.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs in run heavy sets to keep the defense honest against your dropback passing game in this formation.

Check the defensive end or outside linebacker to the play side before the snap, if he is crashing hard down the line you want to pull and keep every time.

Pair this with HB Dive and Y Lead Read Option out of the same set so the defense has to respect both the give and the QB keep threat.

If the defense shows a heavy box pre-snap with the safety creeping down, motion or check to a quick game pass like Slants or Tech Out to punish the extra defender in the box.

In competitive play, sequence this with Gt Read Option and Counter Read Option to keep linebackers guessing on flow direction and force late fits.
