PA Slot Cross is a play-action pass out of Pistol Doubles Y Off that sells the run fake before working a crossing route concept to attack the middle of the field. This is primarily a zone beater that punishes linebackers who bite on the run fake, and the primary read progression starts with the crosser working across the field before checking down to the underneath routes on the play side.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, look at linebacker depth, since stacked or shallow linebackers are more likely to crash on the play fake and vacate the throwing lane for the crosser. Identify single high versus split safety shells before the snap, since single high defenses can rotate a safety down into the crosser's lane and take away the primary read. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the middle hook zone or lurking the crosser, since a disciplined defender there can jump the route and bait a turnover. Cover 3 with aggressive linebacker flow can be a problem shell, since the crosser has to fight through traffic if the underneath defenders do not bite on the run fake. Man coverage with underneath help, such as Cover 1 with a rat linebacker, can shut this down if the crosser gets picked up early, so be ready to reset your progression to the checkdown quickly.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs like first or second and medium to keep defenses honest against the run fake, since the play action sells best when your run game has been established with HB Zone or HB Dive from this same set.
Check the defense pre-snap for two deep safeties, since PA Slot Cross thrives against split safety shells where linebackers are more likely to step up on the play fake and open the middle void for the crosser.
If you see man coverage, hot route your backside receiver into a quick out or speed cut to give yourself an immediate answer if the crosser gets picked up by a trailing defender.
Use manual receiver control on the crosser against man coverage to manipulate the rub and separate from a trailing linebacker or safety in coverage.
Pair this with PA Cross or Jet PA Cross from the same set to keep the play fake and crossing action consistent, forcing linebackers to freeze longer as the series continues.
