PA Slot Cross uses a play-action fake from Pistol to hold the linebackers before working a crossing route concept underneath deep routes on the outside. The slot receiver runs the crosser through the middle of the field while outside routes stretch the defense vertically and horizontally, making this a strong man beater since the crosser creates natural separation against man defenders trailing across the formation. The primary read progression starts with the crosser coming across the field on shallow to intermediate depth, then works out to the sideline routes if the linebackers sink or the crosser gets picked up in man coverage.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment, if you see two deep safeties in a shell that suggests zone coverage, the crosser has room to work in the soft spot behind linebackers and in front of the safeties. Watch for man coverage indicators like a cornerback shaded outside with no help underneath, this is where the crosser creates natural rub and separation against trailing defenders. Post-snap, key the linebacker flow to the play-action fake, if they step up and commit to the run, the middle of the field opens up for the crosser to work through the honey hole. Beware of Cover 3 sink zones with linebackers dropping into passing lanes, a disciplined zone drop can undercut the crosser if the quarterback delivers late. User-controlled defenders sitting in the middle of the field as a lurk threat can jump the crosser route, so scan the flat and sideline options as an alternate read if you sense a user spy or rat linebacker sitting in that window. Watch for blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the play-action drop can be slower to develop and leaves the quarterback exposed if protection breaks down against a nano blitz look.

Usage Tips

Sell the run fake by not immediately flicking to pass, let the play-action animation play out so linebackers bite on the run action before you attack with the crosser.

Use this on early downs like 1st or 2nd and short to medium yardage since the run fake is more believable and defenses are more likely to load the box.

Check the flow of the linebackers after the snap, if they step up hard on the fake, the crosser will have a wide throwing lane against man or zone coverage.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or speed out if you see man coverage press at the line, this gives you an instant answer if the crosser gets jammed.

Pair this play with HB Dive or HB Zone earlier in a drive to establish the run fake, then call PA Slot Cross once the defense starts keying run to punish overaggressive linebacker flow.

Sequence this with PA Cross or Jet PA Cross from the same set to keep defenses guessing on which crosser or route combo you are running out of similar play-action shells.
