Off the fake, the play sends two receivers on deep vertical routes to the outside numbers while the middle of the field gets a deep crossing route that works from one hash to the other, giving the quarterback a true crosser to work behind the play fake. This is a man beater at its core, since the crosser creates natural separation against man coverage while the two vertical routes stretch the field to hold safeties, and the primary read progression starts with the deep crosser working across the middle before working out to either vertical route on the perimeter if the crosser is taken away.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the linebackers are cheating toward the jet motion side, since that confirms the defense is keying run and the crosser will have room to work. Watch for a single high safety alignment before the snap, which signals Cover 1 or Cover 3 and tells you the crosser is the priority read. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, if he sits and does not bite on the play fake, the crosser will be contested and you should work to the vertical routes instead. Look for user controlled defenders sitting in a lurk technique in the intermediate middle, since a smart user can jump the crosser and turn it into a turnover. Diagnose two high safety shells before the snap, since this often signals zone coverage and can clog the crosser's window, making the outside verticals a better answer.

Usage Tips

Use the jet motion pre-snap to bait linebackers and safeties into flowing toward the run fake, which opens up the crosser working behind them.

Attack this play against man coverage looks, especially Cover 1 and Cover 3 Man, since the deep crosser will pull defenders across traffic and create natural rubs.

Hot route the backside vertical route into a comeback or dig if you see a deep safety sitting over the top, giving you a quick answer against zone shells.

Call this on early downs in run heavy personnel counts to keep the defense honest, then pair it with HB Zone or HB Dive from the same set to keep linebackers guessing on run fits.

Mix this in after running Jet Touch Pass or Zone Fake Jet earlier in the game so the defense respects the jet action and bites harder on the fake, opening the crosser even more.
