Jet PA Cross uses jet motion across the backfield to sell the run fake before the QB pulls and rolls into play action. Off the fake, the play caller gets a deep crosser working from the left side all the way across the field underneath the far outside receiver's deep comeback route, while both outside receivers occupy the boundary with vertical breaking routes at the numbers, one running a corner up top and the other sitting on an out breaking comeback. This is a play-action man beater built to exploit linebackers and safeties who bite on the jet sweep fake, and the primary read progression starts with the deep crosser working from far to near, then works to the outside comeback if the middle of the field is clogged.
Pre snap, identify if the defense shifts linebackers or a safety toward the jet motion, which signals man coverage or an overload blitz that plays right into the play action fake. Post snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, if he bites on the run fake the crosser will have a clean throwing lane across the field. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the deep middle third or hovering as a lurk defender, since that threatens the crosser's crossing lane and forces a check down to the outside comeback. This play struggles against disciplined Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells where safeties stay deep and do not respect the run fake, since the crosser runs into help over the top. Man coverage with aggressive underneath linebackers is where this play wins most consistently, since the play action freeze creates natural separation on the crosser before the defender can recover.
Use this on early downs like first and ten or second and short so the run fake has maximum credibility against defenses keying run support.
Watch for linebackers stepping up hard on jet motion before the snap, since that confirms man coverage or a run blitz look that the crosser can exploit immediately.
If you see two deep safeties splitting the field pre snap, key the crosser first since it travels through the vacated middle zone before the safety can rotate over.
Pair this call with HB Zone or Zone Fake Jet earlier in a drive so the defense respects the jet sweep action and commits extra defenders toward the motion, which opens up the play action crosser later.
Hot route the near side comeback into a deeper route if you are facing a Cover 3 shell, since the underneath zone defender can sit on the shorter breaking route and take it away.
