HB Stretch Alert Bubble is an outside zone run out of Pistol Doubles Y Off with a built-in bubble screen alert to the slot receiver. The offensive line flows laterally to stretch the defense, while the alert tag turns the play into a run/screen decision based on the diagram showing the bubble route breaking outside underneath the vertical release of the outside receiver. This is a zone run play with an RPO-style alert component, and the primary read is presnap: identify overloaded box counts or slot defender leverage to decide between handing off the outside zone or throwing the bubble screen.
Watch the slot defender pre-snap, if he is aligned with inside leverage or shows man coverage depth, the bubble alert is likely to be thrown so jump the route with a user defender. Key the play side linebacker flow, if he stays home instead of flowing hard to the stretch action, the outside zone lane will be constricted and the runner should cut back. Identify single-high versus two-high safety shells, single-high leaves the corner isolated on the bubble concept, so a user cornerback in the flat can shut this down. Recognize edge defender containment, if the defensive end squeezes hard on the stretch instead of maintaining outside leverage, the cutback lane opens for the runner. Sim pressure or contain blitzes off the edge to the run side disrupt the stretch timing and force a negative play if the offense cannot alert the bubble in time.
Check the slot defender depth before the snap, if he is playing outside leverage or crashing down on run support, alert the bubble immediately for an easy completion.
Use this play on early downs when the defense is showing a light box or has rotated a safety into the run fit, since the outside zone hits hard against light fronts.
Pair this with HB Zone and Zone Split in the same set so defenses cannot key on stretch action alone, keeping linebackers honest on flow reads.
Against aggressive linebacker blitzes, the bubble alert punishes overpursuit since the alert receiver sits in the vacated space underneath.
Combine with Counter Read Option or Read Option from this set to keep zone and gap schemes blended, forcing the defense to respect multiple run angles from the same personnel look.
