Breakdown

Four Verticals out of Pistol Doubles Y Off sends all four eligible receivers vertical to stretch the field horizontally and vertically, with both outside WRs pushing straight up the sideline, the Y (TE/slot) running a seam route up the middle of the field, and the remaining inside receiver running a shorter vertical stem that settles as a hole route against zone. The RB stays in to block or checks down off the blue arrow, protecting the pocket in max protect while the QB reads the deep routes. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater designed to overload zone drops, with the primary read progressing from the seam (Y) to the deep middle safety's leverage, then working outside to the vertical sideline routes if the safety commits to the seam.

Defensive Reads

Watch the free safety depth and leverage at the snap, if he stays flat footed in the middle of the field he is squatting on the seam and the outside verticals will win. Key the corners' initial technique, soft press or off coverage at the snap signals zone drops that create throwing windows behind the shortest sitting vertical route. Identify Cover 2 by two safeties starting deep at the same depth pre-snap, this concept attacks the seams between the cornerback's flat drop and the safety's deep half responsibility. Recognize Cover 3 rotation post-snap when one safety rotates down into the box, since the remaining deep defender has to cover the entire width of the field against four verts. Beware disguised Cover 1 or Cover 0 man blitzes, if the corners jump to press alignment and a safety creeps toward the line pre-snap, this play is vulnerable to sacks or pass breakups without a hot route adjustment on the inside receiver.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two deep safeties or one high, since this concept punishes both Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells if the MOFO or MOFC safety bites on the seam. Use motion or a hard count to bait the safety into showing his hand before the snap so you know which vertical route will be open. Hot route the shallow inside receiver into a sit route or drag against man coverage if you diagnose Cover 1 or Cover 0, since four verts loses value against tight man with no natural rub. Pair this play in your call sheet with Slants or PA Slot Cross to keep the defense honest on quick game and play-action looks before hitting them with the explosive vertical shot. Best called on early downs or obvious passing situations where you can eat a sack, and always keep the RB in to block against pressure-heavy fronts so the QB has time to climb the ladder of reads.
