PA Cross is a play-action pass out of Pistol Doubles Y Off that sells the run fake before working a deep crossing route combo. Off the play fake, one outside receiver runs a deep dig that breaks across the middle while the backside receiver clears out on a deep post, and a third receiver on the play side works an underneath crosser toward the sideline for a checkdown option, with the running back staying in to check block before releasing to the flat. This is primarily a man beater that stresses linebackers and safeties who bite on the run fake, and the progression starts with the deep dig crossing the field, then works down to the underneath crosser and the flat release if the defense sits deep.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety shells since a lone deep safety struggles to cover both the post and the dig working across the field. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they crash hard on the play fake the underneath crosser and dig will have soft grass to work into against man coverage. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender sitting in the deep middle or lurking the crosser lane, since that spy shuts down the primary read and forces a check to the flat. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest vulnerability, especially against Cover 1 or Cover 0 blitz packages that leave the post and dig singled up. Zone drops with a deep half safety cheating over top of the dig combined with quick underneath blitz pressure can take away the whole progression, so protection integrity on the play fake matters against disguised pressure.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs like first or second and medium to keep defenses honest against your run game out of this same personnel grouping.
Look for linebackers stepping up hard on the play fake pre-snap alignment, since that opens the deep dig and crosser immediately after the boot action sells.
Hot route the flat back into a deeper option route if you see man coverage matched up on him, giving you an extra layer against blitz-heavy man looks.
Pair this with HB Dive or HB Zone earlier in a series so the linebackers respect the run action, then dial up PA Cross to hit the crossers behind a softened front seven.
Use PA Slot Cross or Escort PA Cross as complementary calls in the same drive to keep the defense guessing between different crossing angles off similar formation looks.
