Breakdown

HB Zone Wk is an inside zone run out of Singleback Wing Close 12 personnel, showing two tight ends stacked with the offensive line and a wing set to the closed side. The diagram shows the halfback taking a weak side track behind the line, reading the zone blocking flow from the play side double teams before pressing a lane between the tackles or bouncing outside. This is a pure run play with no route combos, so the primary read progression starts with the HB keying the defensive tackle over the guard, then working through his zone landmarks to find the crease created by the double team and TE combo blocks.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap identify if the defense is showing a stacked box with linebackers crashing downhill, since that forces the HB to bounce weak side quickly instead of pressing between the tackles. Look at defensive tackle alignment on the play side, a shaded 3-technique or 1-technique changes where the natural crease opens against this zone scheme. Watch for user-controlled linebackers flowing hard to the strong side wing look, this is exactly the leverage the weak side zone track is designed to exploit. Post-snap key the play side double team, if the defensive lineman gets immediate movement the HB should stick to his zone track, if there is a push back the back needs to bounce outside quickly. This run struggles against heavy blitz packages that bring extra defenders off the edge weak side before the zone blocks can climb to the second level, so avoid calling it into obvious run blitz looks.

Usage Tips

Run this out of 12 personnel to bait base or nickel fronts into thinking pass with two tight ends on the field, then hit them with inside zone. Check the box count before the snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box since the extra TE and wing do not add a true lead blocker for stacked fronts. Use the weak side flow to attack defenses that overload their run fits to the strong side or wing alignment. Pair this with HB Zone Toss and Wide Zone from the same set so linebackers cannot sit on one zone landmark and start flowing too fast. Mix in PA Cross or PA TE Flood off the same look once you have established HB Zone Wk to punish linebackers who are keying the run fake.
