Stick X-Dig

Breakdown

Stick X-Dig out of Singleback Wing Close combines a quick stick concept to one side with a deep dig from the X receiver, giving the quarterback a true high-low and horizontal-vertical stretch on the same snap. The stick side (flat plus a short curl or hitch) attacks underneath zone defenders and man coverage that jumps the flat, while the X-Dig works behind linebackers and in front of the safety for a big chunk play against zone drops. Primary read starts with the stick combo for a quick, safe completion, then progresses to the X-Dig if the underneath defenders sit on the short routes and open the middle window.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and leverage, since a single high safety cheating over the top signals Cover 3 or Cover 1 and tells you the dig window will be tighter but still open behind the linebackers. Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he sinks with the stick route hard, that is your green light to trust the X-Dig since the shallow zone is occupied. Identify any inside linebacker showing blitz or a user-controlled lurk defender sitting in the shallow middle zone, since that defender can undercut the dig route if he reads the quarterback's eyes. This concept struggles against Cover 2 Man or Cover 4 with aggressive underneath zone drops, since the flat defender and a robber can squeeze both routes and force a checkdown. Man coverage with inside leverage on the X receiver can jump the dig route early, so if you see a corner playing tight man with safety help over the top, be ready to reset to the stick side instead of forcing the throw.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a shift to confirm man versus zone before the snap, since the stick side reacts differently depending on coverage type.

If you see Cover 3 or Cover 4 with linebackers sinking into short zones, go straight to the X-Dig read and throw it on time before the safety can rotate over.

Against man coverage, especially Cover 1 or Cover 0, the stick combo wins fast so get the ball out quickly to avoid the blitz and use hot routes to convert the TE into a quicker option if you see a blitzer keying the RB.

This play pairs well with Mtn Corndog Mesh or PA Cross in your called sequence, since those plays punish teams sinking too many defenders underneath to stop the dig route.

Best used on second and medium or third and medium, where the stick concept provides a safe checkdown and the dig provides the explosive answer if the defense sells out on short zones.
