Mtn Zone Alert is a play-action deep shot out of Singleback Wing Close 12 personnel. The X receiver runs a vertical route up the sideline off a hard stem, the flanker to the boundary side runs a quick out and up (pivot) toward the sideline, and the fullback releases on a shallow drag underneath from the backfield. This is a zone beater built to attack corners sitting on flat and curl zones by sending the vertical route past the safety while the underneath drag and pivot occupy linebackers and corners in the short zone. Primary read progression starts with the deep vertical against single high or zone drop off, then works down to the pivot route, with the drag as the checkdown against pressure or aggressive underneath coverage.
Pre-snap, identify if the safety is showing single high or two high, single high leaves the vertical route open against zone drops. Watch the corner over the X receiver, if he is playing off with outside leverage he is vulnerable to the deep vertical beating his zone drop. Post-snap, key the linebacker responsible for the drag zone, if he steps up to sell run support the fullback drag becomes an easy completion underneath. This play struggles against aggressive Cover 3 buzz or Cover 4 quarters where the corner sinks hard into deep thirds or quarters, taking away the vertical shot. Watch for user-controlled defenders lurking in the pivot route area, a smart user will sit on that route since it is the intermediate answer in the progression.
Call this on early downs or 2nd and medium when defenses are still reading run out of 12 personnel and Wing Close alignment.
Check the safety pre-snap, if you see a single high look with the corner playing off, take the deep shot to the vertical route on your first read.
Against two high shells, hold the ball a beat longer and look for the pivot route to break open as the corner sinks into his zone drop.
Use the fullback drag as your answer versus zone blitzes or when the defense brings pressure off the edge, it is a quick answer that keeps you on schedule.
Pair this with Mtn Cheat WR Comeback or Mtn Out N Up from the same set to keep defenses guessing between shallow zone beaters and this deep shot, forcing safeties to respect multiple route depths from the same formation look.
