Wide Zone out of Singleback Wing Close (12 personnel) is a pure outside zone run play with the HB taking a lateral, wide-aligned handoff track toward the play side edge. The offensive line and both TEs execute zone-blocking rules, sealing horizontal running lanes and climbing to the second level while the HB reads blocks from the backside cutback lane to the frontside bounce. This is a run-heavy, gap-scheme beater against aggressive downhill defenses, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is playside edge first, then cutback if the alley closes.
Defensive Reads
Watch for stacked fronts and 4-3 Over looks with the strong safety in the box, these clog the frontside zone lane and force an immediate cutback read. Cover 3 and Cover 1 with fast-flowing linebackers can be gashed on the cutback if the defense over-pursues the zone stretch action. If you see a Mike linebacker or user-controlled defender sitting still and reading the mesh point, expect a downhill run fit that eliminates the cutback lane, be ready to bounce it further outside instead. A 46 Bear front or heavy blitz package with edge defenders crashing hard inside will erase the frontside track, so respect the blitz and expect a low gain unless the backside cutback lane opens. Post-snap, track the play side TE's block, if he loses his zone-step angle to the flowing defensive end, the cutback becomes the only viable path for positive yardage.
Usage Tips
Attack light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, since the wide zone track needs room to stretch the edge before cutting back.
Check pre-snap for overloaded fronts or a crashing edge defender, and hot route the playside TE to a chip or use motion to influence the count if you see a nano blitz look.
Pair this with HB Dive and Duo out of the same Wing Close set so defenses cannot key on blocking angles, then hit Wide Zone late in a drive once linebackers start flowing hard to gap runs.
Use manual control on the HB and press the frontside hole aggressively before pulling back to the cutback lane, patience is the difference between a 3 yard gain and a home run cutback.
Best called on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when the defense expects balance, and it also pairs well with PA Cross or PA TE Flood off the same run action to keep linebackers honest.
