Breakdown

DBL Outs is a route concept out of Singleback Wing Close 12 personnel that attacks the boundary with two out breaking routes stacked on top of a deep dig. The diagram shows the outside receiver running a shallow out to the flag side, the inside slot receiver running a corner cutting quick out underneath, and the TE working a deep in breaking route across the field from the opposite side, while a fourth receiver runs a wheel style route breaking outside vertically off the numbers. The primary read progression starts with the outermost out route as the quick throw, works to the underneath out for a rhythm throw against zone, and comes back to the deep crossing route as the man beater against tight coverage.

Defensive Reads

Check for cornerbacks playing outside leverage pre-snap, that alignment invites the out routes but a hard squat technique can jump the throw Identify if the defense is in zone by watching the underneath linebackers, a curl to flat defender sitting on the numbers will undercut the shallow out Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the deep crossing route since it creates natural separation against trailing defenders Watch for a lurking safety rotating down late, that is the biggest threat to the underneath out and can bait a turnover if the quarterback stares it down Blitz heavy zero coverage calls beat this play quickly since the deep drops take time to develop and the quarterback needs a hot read outlet against pressure

Usage Tips

Use this concept on second and medium to third and long when you need a high percentage completion with YAC potential on the out routes

Read the cornerback depth pre-snap, if he is playing off you can hit the underneath out immediately for a rhythm throw before the defense can close

Hot route the deep crosser to a shallow drag if you are getting pressure up the middle so your quarterback has a faster outlet

Combine this with Stick X-Dig in the same set to keep defenders honest, since Stick X-Dig attacks the middle while DBL Outs stacks the sideline

Look off the safety before committing to the out routes since a two high shell will squeeze the sideline throws and force you to the crossing route instead
