Breakdown

Duo out of Singleback Wing Close 12 personnel is a downhill power run that uses double-team blocks at the point of attack to create a vertical crease before the HB presses upfield. The diagram shows the HB aligned in the backfield with a lead angle toward the strong side, working off double teams from the interior line to seal the front and climb to the second level. This is a gap and seam run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read is a one cut decision: press the double team double team double team, then explode off the first hesitation from the linebacker flowing downhill.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in a base 4-3 or 3-4 front with two off linebackers, since light boxes with only six or seven defenders in the box are the ideal shell for Duo to hit the crease. Watch safety depth before the snap. A single high safety with linebackers playing downhill fast will crash this run quickly, so look for two high shells or safeties that bite on other run action first. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker's first step. If he attacks the line of scrimmage instead of reading the double team, the cutback lane behind the double team opens up. User controlled defenders sitting in the hole waiting to blow up the double team are the biggest threat to this play, so avoid Duo when the opponent consistently spies the middle linebacker. This run gets shut down by gap sound, disciplined fronts that hold their gaps and let the double team come to them rather than shooting a gap, forcing the back to bounce into unblocked defenders.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs, especially 1st and 10 or 2nd and short, when you want to establish tempo and set up play action later in the drive.

Check the linebacker depth pre-snap. If both inside linebackers are sitting shallow and stacked behind the double teams, Duo has room to break because they have to fight through blockers before they can flow.

Use your control of the HB post-snap to press the mesh point hard. Do not rush the cut. Duo lives on patience and one aggressive cut through the crease.

Pair Duo with HB Dive and Wide Zone from this same set to keep defenders guessing between downhill power and stretch zone concepts.

Avoid calling this into stacked eight man fronts with both safeties in the box, since the double teams get overwhelmed and there is no easy bailout throw built into this look.
