Breakdown

Mtn PA Z Slide is a play-action pass out of Singleback Wing Close with 12 personnel that uses a mountain motion action before the snap to shift the strength of the formation. Off the fake, the outside receiver runs a deep corner-post while the middle route breaks flat across the field on a slide/drag underneath, and the flanker works a shallow crosser under both, giving you a true three-level stretch (deep, intermediate cross, and underneath). The backside player releases vertically up the numbers as a fourth option, and the play-action fake with an angled sim protection up front sells run to hold linebackers before they can drop into their zone landmarks. Primary read progression starts with the deep corner route if the play fake pulls the safety down, then works to the intermediate slide/drag crossing the field, and finally checks down to the vertical outlet or the shallow crosser if the middle is jumped.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, watch the safety depth and alignment before the mountain motion, if a safety cheats down into the box that is a strong indicator of man coverage or a run blitz look. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, if he bites hard on the play-action fake he will vacate the throwing lane for the slide/drag route across the middle. User-controlled defenders sitting in the intermediate crossing lane can jump the drag route, so if you see a defender sink into that area pre-throw, reset to the corner route or the checkdown. Cover 3 and Cover 1 shells are the most vulnerable to this concept because the flat zone defender and deep third defender both have to respect the play-action and the vertical stem before the routes break. Watch for Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells rotating a safety over the top of the corner route, that rotation is the tell to abandon the deep shot and take the easier throw underneath before the pocket collapses.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety, which tells you whether you are facing man or zone before the snap.

This play hunts Cover 3 and Cover 1 defenses hard because the play-action freeze on linebackers opens up the intermediate slide route working across the middle.

If you see two deep safeties (Cover 2 or Cover 4), key the corner route first since it can be squeezed by a rotating safety, and be ready to work the drag underneath instead.

Call this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and medium) to keep the defense honest against your run game out of Wing Close, then mix in Mtn Zone Alert or Mtn Out N Up to punish defenses that start jumping the slide route.

Pair this with HB Dive or Wide Zone earlier in a series so the play-action freeze actually holds linebackers, then hit Mtn PA Z Slide once the defense starts cheating up on run reads.
