PA Y-Drag Wheel is a play-action pass out of Singleback Wing Close 12 personnel that uses the run fake to hold linebackers while the underneath TE releases on a wheel route up the sideline after selling a shallow drag. The diagram shows the outside receiver running a deep vertical clear out, the flanker running a corner breaking route off the seam, the fullback or TE running the red drag underneath from the backfield across the formation, and a flat route from the inside receiver stacking the boundary. This is primarily a man beater since the wheel route out of the backfield or TE alignment creates natural leverage against man coverage linebackers or safeties who cannot stay on top, though it also stresses zone defenses that flow hard to the drag. The primary read progression starts with the wheel route against man leverage, comes down to the drag over the middle as the secondary read, and finishes with the flat route as the checkdown against soft zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense has a linebacker or slot corner walked up over the TE or fullback alignment since that defender is the key to the wheel route matchup. Watch for single high safety looks such as Cover 1 or Cover 3 since the wheel route exploits the lack of a second deep defender to help over the top. Post-snap, key on whether the underneath defender covering the drag route sinks or widens with the wheel route, since a well disciplined defender who stays home on the drag will force the quarterback to the flat or corner route. Beware of Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties, since a defender can sit on top of the wheel route and the corner route which clogs the deep half of the field. Look for disguised blitzes with the linebacker who would normally cover the wheel route instead rushing, since this creates a favorable matchup but leaves the quarterback exposed if protection breaks down.

Usage Tips

Check pre-snap for single high versus two high safety shells since the wheel route wins big against man coverage with a single high safety who has to help over the top on the corner route.

If you see man coverage with a linebacker or safety matched on the TE running the wheel, throw with anticipation before the break since the route creates instant separation against slower defenders.

Against zone shells, work the drag as your primary progression since it settles into the void behind linebackers and in front of deep zone defenders.

Use this play on second and medium or third and short situations where defenses often play man coverage to shut down the underneath drag.

Pair this play with HB Dive or Wide Zone earlier in a series to get linebackers biting on run fakes, then dial up PA Y-Drag Wheel to punish overaggressive run support with the wheel route.
