Breakdown

PA Cross Y Delay is a play-action pass out of Singleback Wing Close 12 personnel that sells the run fake before releasing a deep crossing route from the backside X receiver, a delayed release from the Y (TE) up the seam off the play fake, and a flat/wheel breakout from the slot on the strong side. The delayed release from the tight end is the money route against man coverage since defenders bite on the initial run fake and lose the leverage battle once the TE breaks vertical. Primary read progression starts with the deep crosser working across the field, moves to the Y delay route sitting behind the linebackers or splitting the seam, and checks down to the underneath flat/wheel route on the strong side if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Check safety depth pre-snap since a single high safety indicates man or Cover 3 look, both of which the deep crosser and Y delay route exploit well. Watch linebacker spacing at the snap, if they step up hard on the run fake the Y delay route will sit wide open behind them in the vacated zone. Identify Cover 2 shells before the snap since the corner sitting underneath the crosser route can jump the throw if the quarterback holds it too long. Key on user-controlled defenders spying the middle of the field, a lurking linebacker or safety can undercut the Y delay route if the quarterback telegraphs the throw. This play struggles against disciplined zone defenses that stay square and do not bite on the play fake, so avoid calling it against teams sitting in Tampa 2 or Cover 4 match zones.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs (1st or 2nd and short to medium) when the defense expects run based on personnel and formation tendencies. Look for linebackers creeping into the box pre-snap since that confirms the play-action fake will hold them for the Y delay route to develop. Hot route the flat/wheel receiver into a deeper option if you see a single high safety cheating toward the crosser, since that opens up space underneath. Pair this play with HB Dive or Duo out of the same set earlier in a drive so the defense keys run and bites harder on the fake when you call PA Cross Y Delay later. Against aggressive man coverage teams, trust the deep crosser as your first read since the delayed traffic at the line naturally picks off trailing defenders.
