Defensive Reads

If you see Cover 3 or Cover 1 with linebackers flowing hard to the play side on the fake, the wheel route will be wide open against a blown assignment. Watch for a user-controlled safety or linebacker sitting in a lurk spot near the sideline, since that defender can undercut the wheel route if he reads play action quickly. Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with safeties staying deep and not biting on the run fake are the best defense against this concept, since they take away both the wheel and the deep crosser. Blitz packages that send extra defenders to the toss side actually help the offense here, as long as the HB gets a clean release before working up the sideline on the wheel.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when the defense has shown run blitz or aggressive linebacker flow to the toss side on previous snaps. Watch pre-snap for safeties cheating toward the box or corners playing hard outside leverage, both indicate the defense is primed to bite on the toss fake and open up the wheel. If the defense shows two deep safeties in a shell, hot route the underneath crosser to a quick out or hitch since the wheel will have less room to work vertically. Pair this play with actual HB Zone Toss or HB Toss Fk Reverse earlier in a series so the defense over reacts to the same toss action, then punish linebacker flow with this wheel shot. Against man coverage, key the defender aligned over the HB pre-snap. If it is a linebacker with no safety help over the top, throw the wheel with anticipation as soon as he commits to run support.
