Mtn PA Sprint HB Flat

Breakdown

Mtn PA Sprint HB Flat is a play-action sprint out concept from Singleback Wing Close that uses the Mtn (mountain) tag to bring the tight ends into the route concept while the quarterback flows to the edge on a sprint action. The HB flat route is the primary component of the design, giving the QB a quick, high percentage outlet on the boundary right off the fake, while the mountain tag layers vertical and intermediate threats from the TEs to hold the second level defenders. This is a play-action, sprint out based man and zone beater built for moving the pocket and attacking one half of the field, with the primary read progression starting at the HB flat, then working up to the underneath TE crosser or dig, and finally to the deep mountain route if the safety bites on the run fake.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, check for a flat defender or cornerback sitting outside the sprint out side, since this is the primary threat that can jump the HB flat route and blow up the first read. Identify two high safety shells before the snap, this play beats split safety zone coverages because the sprint action pulls linebackers out of position and opens the flat and underneath crossing lanes. Watch for a user controlled defender spying the sprint out lane or dropping into a shallow zone to rob the HB flat, this is the primary counter defenses use against this concept. Post snap, key the play side linebacker's first step, if he sits and reads instead of flowing with the fake, expect him to jump the flat route or the shallow crosser. Against man coverage with press corners, look for a nano blitz or edge pressure package designed to collapse the pocket before the QB can set his feet on the sprint, since this negates the extra time the sprint out is meant to create.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs when you have already established the HB Dive or Duo from this personnel group so the play fake actually freezes linebackers and safeties.

Sprint out toward the side with your best blocking TE if the defense shows edge pressure, since the moving pocket needs a lead blocker to hold up against contain rushers.

If the defense shows two high safeties pre snap, target the HB flat immediately and take the easy completion rather than climbing the progression into a robber defender sitting underneath.

Against man coverage with a linebacker matched on the HB, the flat route is a near automatic win due to the natural leverage created by the sprint action, so trust the first read.

Pair this call with Mtn Corndog Trail or Mtn Corndog Mesh earlier in a series so the defense respects the mountain tag routes and opens up the HB flat as a conflict read for flowing linebackers.
