Breakdown

HB Dive out of Singleback Wing Close (12 personnel) is a straight downhill run play that sends the HB directly north through the A or B gap behind the interior line push. The diagram shows both TEs tight to the formation with no motion or route assignments, meaning this is a pure blocking scheme designed to seal the interior gaps and get the fullback-less backfield lead blocker look from the extra TE on the wing. There are no pass routes on this play, confirming it as a run-only concept with no play-action or RPO element attached. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the line, read the initial double team or combo block up front, and cut to whichever gap opens first between the guards and center.

Defensive Reads

Watch the defensive line alignment before the snap. A 4-3 or 3-4 front with the nose shaded toward the play side gap can clog the dive lane immediately. Key the linebacker depth. If the middle linebacker is sitting shallow at five yards or less, he can fill the hole fast and blow up this run before it develops. Identify run blitzes and A-gap pressure packages, since a defense stacking extra bodies inside will diagnose HB Dive quickly and limit it to minimal gains. Look for user-controlled defenders flying downhill immediately at the snap, which signals the defense is sitting on inside runs and this play may need to be shelved for a few series. Cover 1 or Cover 3 with an eight man front is the biggest threat to this play, while light boxes out of Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells give the HB room to break through the line untouched.

Usage Tips

Call HB Dive on early downs or short yardage situations like third and one or fourth and one when you need a quick, low risk gain to stay ahead of schedule.

Check the defensive front pre-snap. If the defense shows a light box with six or fewer defenders due to the extra TE alignment, this play hits fast before linebackers can flow.

Use manual motion sparingly with this play since it has no route assignments, but shifting a TE can help you diagnose if the defense is in man or zone before the snap.

Pair HB Dive with Duo and Wide Zone from this same set to keep defenders guessing between a quick hitting dive and a more patient zone stretch look.

Mix in PA Cross or PA Y-Drag Wheel after running HB Dive a few times to punish linebackers who start crashing down hard on run fits.
