Mtn Cheat WR Comeback runs out of Singleback Wing Close 12 personnel with pre-snap motion cheating the WR across the formation before the snap. At the snap the motion man breaks off a comeback route toward the sideline while the two TEs run a seam sit and a vertical seam, the backside WR runs a deep out and comes back toward the boundary, and the RB releases on a shallow flat drag underneath everything. This is a man beater built around the comeback creating hard separation against trailing corners, with the primary read progression starting at the comeback, working to the seam sit, then vertical seam, then checking down to the flat drag if the corner sits on the comeback route.
Watch the corner over the motion man before the snap, if he stays with the motion across the formation that is a strong man coverage indicator and the comeback route should win. Check safety depth and width, a single high safety leaves the seam routes vulnerable while a two high shell can bracket the vertical seam and force you to the comeback or flat drag. Key the flat defender or nickel corner after the snap, if he sinks under the comeback route that closes the primary window and forces a progression check to the seam sit. User-controlled defenders lurking underneath the seam routes are the biggest threat to this concept, so if a user drops into the intermediate throwing lane bail to the flat drag or comeback depending on leverage. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender and squat corner technique on the comeback route shuts this play down, since it removes both the primary and secondary reads simultaneously.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone, if a defender follows the motion man across the formation that confirms man coverage and the comeback route becomes an easy win versus a trailing corner.
This play excels on second and long or third and medium situations where the comeback route sits right at the sticks for an easy conversion.
Hot route the vertical seam TE into a deeper corner route if you see a two high safety shell trying to bracket the seam.
Pair this play with Mtn Cheat WR Out and Mtn Cheat WR Wheel in your play-calling sequence since all three use the same motion look, forcing the defense to guess between comeback, out, and wheel concepts off identical pre-snap movement.
Against zone coverage, work the seam sit read first since the comeback route can get squatted on by an underneath defender sinking into the flat zone.
