HB Mid Zone

Breakdown

HB Mid Zone out of Singleback Wing Close 12 personnel is a true inside zone run play designed to attack the A and B gaps with a double team at the point of attack and a puller from the wing tight end to seal the edge. The offensive line flows in unison to the play side, giving the HB a natural cutback lane if the initial gap is clogged. This is not a man beater or zone beater in the passing sense, it is a run scheme built to punish light boxes and overaggressive linebacker fills, with the primary read progression being playside double team first, then bounce or cutback based on the flow of the second level defenders.

Defensive Reads

Watch the linebacker depth pre-snap, if both backers are stacked tight behind the line at four yards or less they are likely selling run fits and will crash hard, which sets up a cutback if you can hold the ball long enough. Identify whether the defense is running a 4-3 over or under front, an over front with the shaded nose tilts the natural cutback lane away from the play call, so plan your vision accordingly. Key the playside defensive end, if he is squeezing hard down the line without respecting outside contain, that is a sign the defense expects inside zone and you may need to bounce it outside. User linebackers who spy the mesh point and shoot the gap immediately are the biggest threat to this play, if you see the user flash into the backfield pre-snap consider checking to a different run or audibling to a pass. Heavy blitz packages with extra defenders crashing the A gaps will blow this play up before the double team can climb, if you see a nano blitz alignment pre-snap with defenders stacked on both guards, get out of the run entirely.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap, if you see six or more defenders in the box against 12 personnel, consider audibling to a play-action shot instead since the numbers favor the defense.

Use manual control on the HB immediately after the mesh point rather than relying on CPU logic, patience through the mesh is what separates good zone runners from ones that get stuffed for no gain.

This play hits hardest against odd front looks and 3-4 base fronts where the nose is shaded and creates natural cutback lanes on the backside.

Pair HB Mid Zone with Mtn PA Sprint HB Flat or PA Cross out of the same Wing Close set to keep linebackers honest, once they start crashing down on the zone run the play-action boot off the same look will gash them.

Best used on early downs, first and ten or second and short, to keep defenses guessing and set up RPO Alert Lookie later in the series once the defense shows a run-heavy front.
