Breakdown

PA Cross out of Singleback Wing Close (12 personnel) sells the play-action fake before working a deep crosser as the primary route. The play design shows one receiver running a deep post-corner up the numbers while a second receiver runs a long developing crosser from the opposite side that travels across the entire field underneath the vertical route, and a shallow drag underneath crosses low from the strong side. The HB or FB works a check release into a short flare or leak route out of the backfield. This is a play-action man beater that stresses defenders who bite on the run fake and creates natural rub traffic against man coverage, with the primary read progression going from the deep post-corner shot first, down to the crosser working across the field second, and the underneath drag or check release as the last resort outlet.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the safety shell first: two high safeties signal zone coverage and a softer crosser read, while one high safety often means man coverage or a robber look underneath. Watch linebacker depth at the snap since PA Cross depends on linebackers stepping up to bite on the run fake, if they sit and read they can jump the shallow drag or crosser. Cover 3 with a hard flowing linebacker to the crosser's side is one of the tougher shells against this concept since it can clog the middle read. User-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the intermediate zone are the biggest threat to the crosser, so if you see a defender spying the middle of the field pre-snap, expect them to sit on that route. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can disrupt the play-action fake timing, so a fast defensive end crash off the play side tackle can force an early throw before routes fully develop.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs like first or second and short when defenses are more likely to respect the play-action fake and bite on the run look.

Check the pre-snap safety alignment: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, the crosser will have room to work into the void vacated by underneath defenders chasing the run fake.

Against man coverage, trust the deep post-corner route first since the play-action freeze combined with the vertical stem creates immediate separation.

If the defense shows single high safety pre-snap, be ready to pump to the crosser sooner since the post-corner will be capped by the deep defender.

Pair this play with HB Dive or Duo out of the same Wing Close set earlier in a series so the defense respects the run fake, then dial up PA Cross Y Delay as a change-up to keep linebackers honest on the crosser timing.
