RPO Alert Lookie is a run-pass option out of Singleback Wing Close 12 personnel that pairs an inside run scheme with a quick perimeter throw the QB can pull based on second level defender leverage. The RPO alert mechanic lets you flip between the run action and the pass conflict read at the line, with the lookie route giving you a bubble or flat style outlet to the flanks that punishes overaggressive linebackers stepping up to fill the box. This is primarily a zone and light box beater, and the primary read progression is box count first, then the flowing linebacker or overhang defender on the alert side before deciding to hand off or pull and throw.
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety shells since single high Cover 3 teams tend to funnel a flowing linebacker right into the alert throw window. Watch cornerback depth on the alert side, if the corner is playing off with outside leverage the lookie route has room to work before he can close. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker's first step, if he crashes down to fill the run gap the quick game window opens instantly for the pull and throw. Man coverage with an overhang defender sitting flat footed at the snap can jump the lookie route, so this play loses value against aggressive man press teams with a sitting nickel or dime defender. User controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow flat zone are the main threat, if the user jumps outside on the snap check back to the run since the box count will now favor the ball carrier.
Count the box pre-snap and only pull the RPO alert if the defense is at five or fewer in the box, otherwise trust the run fit and hand it off.
Use your alert hot route to flip the lookie concept to whichever side shows the softer flow or the lighter overhang defender after motion.
This play excels on early downs, run it on first and second and ten to keep defenses honest before dialing up Mtn PA Sprint HB Flat or PA TE Flood off similar formation and personnel to sell the same run fit with a deeper shot.
If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with fast flowing linebackers, pull the throw immediately since the flat area will be uncovered before the corner can sink.
Pair this with HB Dive or Duo out of the same set to condition the defense to bite on run action, then come back to this RPO alert to punish linebackers who key the mesh point too early.
