Mtn Out N Up is a man beater pass concept out of Singleback Wing Close 12 personnel that uses pre-snap motion to help declare coverage before the snap. The diagram shows a jet-style motion man crossing the formation into a shallow out route while the two receivers to the trips side run a combo of an out breaking route and a wheel/up route stacked underneath it, with a deep vertical release from the outside receiver on the boundary. The primary read progression starts with the outside vertical against man coverage on the isolated side, then works back to the shallow out from the motion man against zone leverage, and finally checks down to the underneath out and up combo if the middle of the field opens up.
Check the cornerback depth on the isolated boundary receiver pre-snap since a corner playing tight man technique with no safety help over the top is a green light to fire the deep vertical. Watch the linebacker or safety assigned to the motion man since if he trails across the formation that confirms man coverage and opens up the shallow out for an easy completion. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap because two high shells force you away from the isolated vertical and into the trips side out and up combo instead. Post-snap, key the flat defender on the trips side since if he sinks with the out route the up route will be wide open behind him against zone coverage. Beware of a user controlled defender sitting in a lurk spot near the shallow crossing route since that is the biggest post-snap threat to this concept if the defense reads the motion and jumps the throwing lane.
Use the pre-snap motion to bait the defense into showing man or zone before you even hike the ball, since a defender following the motion man across the formation confirms man coverage immediately.
Attack single high safety shells by targeting the isolated vertical route on the boundary since it forces a one on one matchup with no help underneath.
Against zone coverage with two deep safeties, work the out and up combo on the trips side since the up route can stack on top of the out and stress the flat defender vertically.
Pair this play with Mtn Zone Alert or DBL Outs in your play calling sequence so you can run the same motion look and keep the defense guessing between a shallow zone beating concept and this deeper man beating shot play.
Best called on second or third and medium when you need a chunk gain and want to test if the defense is playing man across the formation.
