Breakdown

Mtn Bench Snag N Go is a Cover 3 beater out of Shotgun Tight Slots that combines motion with a Snag concept on the closed side and a bench route package on the open side. The backside runs a corner route and a shallow bench (flat) route stacked together, the frontside runs a snag combo with a flag route to the corner, a short bench route to the flat, and a vertical go route bending inside off the slot alignment, while the running back releases up the seam as an underneath option against zone drops. This is a full pass concept with no play-action or screen elements, and the primary read progression starts with the seam/go route to attack Cover 3 zone leverage before working down to the snag flat and corner combo if the middle of the field is closed off by a deep third defender.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check the free safety alignment: a single high safety indicates Cover 3 or Cover 1, both of which this play is designed to exploit with the seam and corner routes. Watch the cornerback over the motion man, if he trails across the formation it confirms man coverage and you should target the seam route or corner route in one on one situations. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's zone drop, if he sits shallow and does not carry the seam route vertically, the go route will split the defense for an explosive gain. Look for a user-controlled lurk defender sitting in the underneath middle zone, since this play is vulnerable to a jumped seam route if the user reads the quarterback's eyes early. This concept struggles against Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties capping the seam, so be ready to check down to the bench flat route or bail into a different call if you see two high safeties pre-snap.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing zone or man, since a defender following the motion man across the formation confirms man coverage and tells you to lean on the snag corner route instead of the seam read.

Attack Cover 3 shells by hitting the seam/go route early against the middle linebacker before the deep third safety can rotate over, this is your first read versus a single high safety look.

If the corner and safety squeeze the seam route, work the snag concept flat route as a quick outlet against underneath zone defenders sitting too deep.

Use this play on second and medium or third and short since the flat and bench routes give you a safe underneath completion if the deep shot is not there.

Pair this with Bench and Bench Switch from the same set to keep the defense guessing between full field flood concepts and this seam-attacking variant, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their zone drops.
