PA Seam Stop is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Tight Slots that hits off a run fake to hold the linebackers before releasing two vertical stems into seam routes. Both outside receivers push straight up the numbers and break into seams around ten to twelve yards, with the two remaining backside blockers stepping outside on stop routes to hold the flat defenders and give the quarterback a built in checkdown. The play is designed as a man beater against linebackers who bite on the run fake, and the primary read progression starts with the seam receiver to the play action side, working to the backside seam if the first read is capped, then down to the stop routes as the outlet.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, identify single high versus two high safety shells since single high defenses leave the seams more exposed to the vertical stems. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers who step up on the run fake confirm this play will hit clean against man or Cover 1 looks. Post snap, track any user controlled safety flowing toward the seam route, a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field can jump the throw. Cover 4 and Cover 6 shells with safeties reading run keys can close on the seams quickly, so be ready to check down to the stop routes if the safeties stay deep and squeeze the top of the route. Blitz packages that bring extra defenders through the box can disrupt the play fake timing, so account for edge pressure and be ready to reset feet quickly before delivering the seam throw.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs in run heavy personnel counts to sell the play fake against defenses that are keying run based on formation tendencies.

Check the middle linebacker depth before the snap, if he is sitting shallow expecting run he will bite on the fake and open up both seams.

Hot route the stop routes into flat or quick out breaks if you see man coverage on the outside to create easier separation against press corners.

Throw with anticipation to the seam before the receiver fully breaks, since Cover 3 or Cover 4 defenders sitting on seams can undercut a late throw.
