Defensive Reads

Watch for two deep safeties pre-snap, that Cover 2 or Cover 4 shell will squeeze the deep corner route and force you to work the post/out combo underneath instead. If the linebackers crash hard on the run fake and vacate the middle of the field, the post breaking to the out becomes wide open for an easy completion. Man coverage with a single high safety is where this play hurts defenses most since the corner route wins over the top and the wheel route creates a natural pick against man defenders. Beware of a robber or lurk defender sitting in the shallow crossing area, since the post and out combo runs right through that zone and can get jumped by a spying linebacker. Cover 3 with a hard-charging blitz off the edge is the biggest threat, since the play fake takes time to sell and the deep routes need a full progression to develop.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to sell the run fake convincingly against defenses that are keying run tendencies.

Check the linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are stacked tight to the line expecting run, this play action concept will freeze them and open the post/out combo underneath.

If you see a single high safety, target the deep corner route on the outside since it has one on one leverage against the corner in that void.

Hot route the flare/wheel man into a quicker option against aggressive man coverage teams that like to jump underneath routes with a lurking linebacker.

Pair this with Mtn Inside Zone or HB Mid Draw earlier in a drive so the defense bites on run keys, then punish them with this shot play when they sell out against the ground game.
