Wheel Switch out of Shotgun Tight Slots (11 personnel) is a man beater built around a switch release on the left side and a wheel route out of the backfield on the right. The left outside receiver runs a deep corner post while the inside slot cuts underneath him on a crossing in route, creating a natural rub to shake off man defenders. On the right, the inside receiver runs a quick out/curl toward the sideline while the running back releases from the backfield on a wheel route up the sideline behind him, with the outside receiver at that spot clearing vertically to occupy the deep defender. The primary read starts with the wheel route against man coverage matchups on the running back, then works to the switch release crossing route underneath if the wheel is covered.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a linebacker or slower defensive back aligned over the running back before the snap, that mismatch is the key indicator the wheel route will win. If the defense shows two deep safeties in a zone shell, the wheel route will likely be capped, so be ready to work the switch release crossing route on the opposite side instead. Man coverage with no safety help over the top on the running back's side is the ideal look for this play, especially if the linebacker is playing tight run support technique. Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify if the defense has a linebacker or safety matched up on your running back since that mismatch is what makes the wheel route so deadly against man coverage.

Use motion or a quick glance to bait the defense into showing man versus zone before the snap, then commit to the wheel read if you see a linebacker trying to run with the back vertically.

This play shines on third and medium to long distance when defenses are more likely to play man coverage or blitz, since the wheel and switch release both punish aggressive man technique.

Pair this play with Bench Switch or Mesh Switch in your call sheet to keep the same switch release concept on tape while varying the second read, keeping defenders guessing on which route breaks open.

If the defense shows zone shells pre-snap, be ready to hot route the outside clearing receiver on the right into a deeper route to stretch the zone vertically and open a throwing window underneath for the curl.
