Mtn Bench Swap out of Shotgun Tight Slots is a bench concept with swapped release points designed to attack zone coverage. Pre-snap motion adjusts the receiver alignment before the snap, then the outside receiver on the left runs a deep corner while the inside slot receiver on that side runs the bench route flat to the sideline, creating a natural high low stretch on the flat and deep quarter defenders. On the right side, one receiver runs a deep out breaking route to the sideline while the other works an in and up swap route underneath, giving the quarterback a full field progression that starts with the deep corner read and works down to the underneath crossers if the corner is capped. This is a zone beater built to exploit soft spots between the flat defender and the deep half safety.

Defensive Reads

Check safety depth before the snap since a two high shell tips zone coverage and softens the deep corner and out routes. If a defender mirrors the motion man step for step, expect man coverage and prioritize the swap routes since the traffic created by crossing releases will pick off man defenders. Watch the flat defender on the left side, if he sinks with the corner route the bench route underneath will be wide open. Look for underneath robber or lurk defenders sitting in the middle of the field, they can jump the in cutting swap route on the right side. Man coverage with no help over the top and aggressive blitz packages that remove the flat defender's zone drop can shut this concept down quickly, so check for extra rushers pre-snap.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone based on whether a defender follows the motion man across the formation.

Attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with this concept since the swap routes create natural picks that confuse zone drop landmarks and hold the flat defender.

Progress your read from the deep corner route on the left to the bench route underneath if the corner is capped by a deep half safety.

Pair this play with Bench Switch or Mesh Switch in your play calling sequence so the defense cannot key on the swap action every snap.

Best used on second and medium or third and short since the bench route provides a quick underneath answer if the deep shots are not there.

Watch for user controlled linebackers dropping into the underneath swap lanes and be ready to reset your eyes to the opposite side out route.
