Breakdown

Mtn Bench Swap lines up out of Shotgun Tight Slots with a swap release concept on the boundary side and a deep in/bench route on the field side. The backside receiver runs a deep dig that settles in the bench area at the sideline, while the two receivers to the strong side swap release with one clearing vertical up the numbers and the other working an out breaking route underneath. The near-side back or slot runs a shallow crosser/flat option that gives the QB an easy checkdown against pressure. This is a zone beater built to attack the seams and flat with the bench route as the primary read, progressing to the swap release combo, and finishing with the underneath check.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender after the snap since the swap release combo is designed to create a natural pick and confuse zone drop assignments. If you see a Cover 3 shell, the bench route sitting on the sideline will be open against the outside third defender who has to respect the vertical threat first. Man coverage with underneath help linebackers can jump the shallow crosser, so be ready to climb the progression to the swap release routes on the strong side. Blitz-heavy Cover 0 or Cover 1 looks are risky against this play because the quick underneath option and bench route both provide fast outs against pressure. Key the strong side cornerback leverage before the snap, if he is playing inside shade the vertical clear-out route on the swap release should win outside.

Usage Tips

Use this on second and medium or third and short where the bench route sitting at the sideline gives you a quick chain mover against zone shells.

Check for two high safeties pre-snap because that alignment usually signals a zone shell that struggles to cover the deep bench route on the boundary.

If the defense shows man coverage, hot route the underneath crosser into a slant or speed out to give your QB a faster throw against tight leverage.

Pair this play with Bench and Bench Switch in the same drive so defenses cannot key on the swap release without getting burned by variation.

Use motion pre-snap to identify if the defense is playing man or zone based on whether a defender follows the motion man across the formation.
