HB Quick Base is a downhill run play out of Shotgun Tight Slots with 11 personnel, designed to hit the dive lane quickly before the defense can flow. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking straight ahead at the point of attack with no pulling linemen, indicating a one-back dive scheme that relies on the interior blockers to displace the front and create a lane on the play side. The HB takes a direct handoff and attacks the line of scrimmage immediately, making this a pure run play with no play-action or pass option attached, so the primary read is the frontside gap with a quick bounce path if the initial hole closes.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify linebacker depth: shallow linebackers who are already sitting close to the box will close the dive lane fast and force you to bounce outside. Look for safety rotation into the box, since an eight-man front or a safety cheating down will overload the interior gap this play is designed to hit. Post-snap, key the play side defensive tackle and end, if they get immediate penetration off the snap the RB has to cut backside since there is no lead blocker to clean up. This play struggles against gap-control fronts and A-gap blitzes, since the quick mesh point does not allow time for the line to reset against a stunt. It beats light boxes and passive zone shells where linebackers are dropping into coverage on early downs, giving the RB a clean crease before flow arrives.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs when you need a manageable gain and want to keep the defense honest against your pass-heavy Tight Slots concepts like Mesh and Stick.
Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box, consider bailing to a play-action shot like PA Seam or PA Shot Post instead.
Use HB Quick Base early in a series to set up HB Draw and HB Mid Draw later, since the quick hitting look freezes linebackers who start keying the fast mesh point.
Avoid calling this against heavy blitz fronts with stacked linebackers, since there is no pulling protection to adjust for extra rushers on the play side.
Pair this with Bench or Curl Outs on the following snap to keep defenders guessing between run and quick game concepts from the same formation.
