Stick Switch lines up out of Shotgun Tight Slots with 11 personnel and shows a mirrored switch release concept to both sides of the formation. The slot receivers and outside receivers cross release at the line, with each side running a switch verticals combo: the outside receiver bends inside on a corner route while the slot receiver releases outside and up the sideline on a deep vertical. This is a man beater designed to create natural rub picks at the switch point, and the primary read progression starts with the switch release side that the coverage shows soonest, working from the deep outside vertical down to the corner breaking route underneath it.

Defensive Reads

Identify press man coverage on the outside receivers pre-snap since the switch release is designed to beat physical jam technique with natural picks. Watch for a single high safety rotating late, this tells you the corner route on the switch side will have a soft window behind the linebackers. Key the flat defender or curl to flat defender after the snap, if he sinks with the corner route the deep vertical from the slot receiver should be open behind him. Be wary of cover 2 shells with two deep safeties splitting the field evenly, since this can clog the deep vertical lanes on both switch releases and force a checkdown. Watch for user linebackers dropping into the passing lanes at the switch point, aggressive user lurk defenders can jump the corner route if the quarterback stares it down too long.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two deep safeties shaded to one side, attack the switch release on the opposite side where the corner route has more room to break. Motion a slot receiver pre-snap to force the defense to declare man or zone coverage, this helps confirm whether the switch release will beat man leverage at the top of the route. Use the switch release concept against press man coverage since the crossing release at the line disrupts jam timing and creates natural separation.
