Mid Zone out of Shotgun Tight Slots is an inside zone run play that sends the offensive line flowing laterally to the play side while the HB reads the frontside double teams before deciding to bend it back or hit the crease downhill. This is a run play designed to beat gap and one-gap defenses that overcommit to the edges, using zone blocking rules to create a natural cutback lane. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is the frontside combo blocks first, then the backside cutback lane if the frontside gets clogged by a fast-flowing linebacker.

Defensive Reads

Check the linebacker depth before the snap, stacked linebackers who sit tight to the line signal a run blitz look that can blow up frontside zone if not cut back quickly Look for defensive tackles shaded hard to one gap, this tells you which side of the zone concept will have the cleanest double team release Identify safety rotation post snap, a safety flying downhill into the box early usually means the defense is selling run support and the cutback lane will stay open longer Watch for user controlled defensive linemen crashing down the line, this defeats zone blocking rules and forces you to bounce the run wider than designed This play struggles against gap exchange stunts and contain blitzes from the edge, if the defense shows a heavy edge rush pre snap consider switching to a play-action shot instead

Usage Tips

Run this out of a run heavy personnel look on early downs to keep the defense honest and set up your play-action shots later in the drive

Use the left or right hot route stick to shift the strength of the formation if you see the defense overloading one side before the snap

Attack bases with light boxes or six men in the box, this is a great base concept versus 4-3 and 4-2 looks that spread linebackers out horizontally

Pair Mid Zone with HB Draw and Inside Zone in your play calling sequence so linebackers cannot key run direction based on personnel or motion

Use manual ball carrier control to press the frontside hole and bounce outside if you see the backside defensive end crash down too hard, this manufactures explosive cutback yardage
