HB Sweep out of Shotgun Tight Slots is a pure run play with 11 personnel, aligning the offense in a tight bunch-style formation to disguise the outside run action. The blocking scheme pulls linemen to seal the edge as the HB takes the handoff and stretches wide, reading blocks from the pulling guard and TE before deciding to bounce outside or cut upfield. This is not a man or zone beater in the passing sense since there are no routes run, it is designed to attack overpursuing linebackers and light boxes with edge speed.
Defensive Reads
Watch for the defensive end and outside linebacker crashing down the line, if they stay disciplined and hold contain the sweep will get stuffed at the line. Look for scrape exchange linebackers who flow hard to the play side, this is the biggest threat to blowing up the pulling guard's block. Check safety depth before the snap, if a safety is stacked in the box or walked down near the line of scrimmage the sweep loses its numbers advantage. Post snap, identify any user-controlled defender flying downhill from the second level since they can beat the puller and force the HB to cut back prematurely. This play struggles against overload blitzes to the play side and heavy run-blitz packages that stack extra defenders outside the tackle box.
Usage Tips
Call this play when you see a light box with six or fewer defenders, especially against base 4-3 or nickel fronts that show no extra run support.
Use pre-snap motion or check the alignment of the SAM linebacker and force defender before the snap, if they are crashing hard inside the sweep can bounce outside for a big gain.
Take manual control of the lead blocker or pulling guard to seal the edge defender and create a clean lane for the HB.
Pair this with HB Mid Draw and HB Quick Base from the same set to keep defenses honest on inside versus outside run reads.
Best used on early downs like first and ten or second and short when defenses are not in obvious pass-heavy nickel or dime packages.
