WR Corners from Shotgun Tight Slots (11 personnel) is a two-man route concept with mirrored corner routes attacking both sidelines. Both outside receivers release vertically before breaking hard toward the sideline into the corner of the end zone, while the two inside slot receivers run quick out routes underneath to occupy the flat defenders and clear space for the corners. The RB stays in to protect off the blue route showing a check release or block assignment, confirming this is a play-action or drop back pass designed to stretch the defense vertically and horizontally. It is primarily a man beater that isolates corners on the deep sideline break, and the primary read progression is to work strong side corner first, then work backside corner if the strong safety rotates over the top.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, identify whether the safeties are showing two high or rotating down to one high, since two high shells force you to hold the corner route longer and throw with anticipation. Watch the cornerback alignment at the snap, tight man press leaves them vulnerable to the corner break, while soft zone alignment means the underneath outs from the slots become the quicker answer. Post snap, track the flat defender or outside linebacker dropping under the corner route, a nano blitz or aggressive edge pressure package can collapse the pocket before the deep routes develop. Beware of a user controlled deep safety sitting in a lurk position over the top, since that defender can undercut the corner route if you telegraph the throw too early. This play struggles versus cover 3 and cover 4 quarters shells with disciplined deep defenders, since the corner route runs directly into the deep outside third or quarter, so check the sideline defender depth before committing to the throw.

Usage Tips

Call this on 2nd or 3rd and long when you need a explosive gain and the defense is showing single high safety pre snap.

Check the cornerback depth before the snap, if they are playing tight man press coverage the corner route wins easily against outside leverage.

Use the underneath out routes from the slots as your hot route answer versus a soft cover 2 shell if the corners are getting undercut by a deep half safety.

Combine this with Bench or Curl Outs from the same Tight Slots set so the defense cannot key on the vertical stem, since both plays start with similar release angles but break underneath instead of deep.

If the user controlled defender jumps the underneath out route on the slot, immediately reset your eyes to the corner route on that same side since the throwing window opens up over the top.
