WR Corners out of Shotgun Tight Slots is a pure vertical passing concept with both outside receivers running corner routes to the boundary, breaking hard toward the sideline at roughly 12 to 15 yards after selling a vertical stem. The inside slot defenders (shown running short out breaks near the line) act as underneath outlet routes to hold linebackers and clear space for the corners, while the blue route up the middle gives a vertical stretch that occupies the deep middle defender. This is a man beater designed to win on the outside with double corner routes stretching the sideline, with the primary read progression going from the corner route on the side of your pre-snap leverage read to the opposite corner if the first is blanketed.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety shells, a two high look with corners playing off coverage is the ideal alignment to attack with the corner routes since it signals zone drops with soft outside leverage. Watch cornerback press alignment at the snap, if the corner is jamming at the line and running with the receiver in man coverage, the corner route becomes tightly contested and you should look to the underneath outlet instead. Key the deep middle safety in Cover 3 or Cover 1 looks, if that safety flies to one side of the field after the snap, throw the corner route on the opposite side where the void opens up. Be alert for user-controlled defenders sitting in the deep quarter or half, a smart user will often bail late to jump the corner route, so pump fake or manipulate with your eyes before committing to the throw. Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties splitting the field are the toughest matchup for this play since both corner routes run directly into the safety's zone, so expect this concept to get shut down against a disciplined two high shell with underneath zone defenders sitting on the short routes.
Usage Tips
Take a pre-snap look at both corners' alignment, if they are playing outside leverage with no safety help over the top, the corner route to that side is going to be a low percentage throw and you should switch your first read to the other side. Use hot routes to convert one of the short underneath routes into a quick out or flat route if you see man coverage with no underneath help, giving you a faster access throw versus blitz looks. This play shines on 2nd and long or 3rd and long situations where the defense is more likely to play zone drop coverage that opens up the corner window against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells. Pair this play with Bench or Curl Outs earlier in a series to condition the defense to expect shorter throws, then call WR Corners to attack the same formation with a double move up top. Against aggressive man coverage defenses, combine this call with Stick or Mesh in your play-calling sequence to keep the defense guessing between quick game and vertical shots from the same personnel and formation look.
