Defensive Reads

Cover 4 and quarters shells are the primary target since the dig route settles into the soft spot behind the underneath defenders and in front of the deep safeties. Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow to jump the trail route the dig behind him becomes the automatic answer. Man coverage teams that press the drive route at the line can disrupt the timing, so look for a free release before trusting the shallow crosser. User controlled lurk defenders sitting in the intermediate middle can bait the dig throw, so scan the corner route on the backside as a bailout if that defender sits and reads the quarterback's eyes. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge will collapse the pocket before the deep dig develops, so check protection numbers and be ready to work the shallow trail route as a quick outlet.

Usage Tips

Use this on second and medium to second and long when you expect quarters or Cover 4 shells that funnel throws underneath.

Check the safeties pre snap, if they are sitting deep and flat footed the dig behind the drive route will be wide open once it clears the second level.

Hot route the shallow crosser into a speed out if you see man coverage across the field to create instant separation against outside leverage corners.

Pair this play with Curl Outs or Stick Switch from the same set so the defense sees similar route stems and cannot key on the deep dig every snap.

If the user drops a defender into the shallow trail window, reset to the deep corner route on the backside since it is running away from that leverage.
