Breakdown

PA Seam out of Shotgun Tight Slots is a play-action pass built off the run fake to sell the linebackers and safeties before the two vertical routes clear the middle of the field. The diagram shows two receivers releasing up the seams: the near slot runs a seam that angles inside before breaking back outside near the numbers, while the other seam runner stems straight up the hash and bends outward near the top of the route. The outside receivers on both sides run go routes up the sideline to stretch the corners deep, clearing the intermediate seam windows for the primary targets. This is a man beater against single high safety looks and a zone beater against split safety shells that soften late, with the primary read progression starting on the near seam breaking route and working to the far seam if the linebackers sink into the throwing lane.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, check safety depth: if you see one deep safety in the middle of the field, expect the seams to have room to work against man coverage. Watch linebacker depth at the snap; if they step up hard on the run fake, the seam windows will open immediately behind them. Identify Cover 3 zone drops post snap, since the seam runners can split the hook defenders if the middle linebacker bites on the play fake. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can disrupt the play action timing, so look for overload blitzes or a nano blitz look pre snap. Cover 2 with two deep safeties can be tough on this play since both safeties can rob the seams over the top, so know your check into a different concept if you see that shell.

Usage Tips

Sell the run fake by holding the ball on the play-action long enough to freeze linebackers before turning to throw the seams.

Use this against single high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3, since the deep safety cannot cover both seams and both sideline go routes at once.

Hot route the outside go routes into deep comebacks if you are facing a soft Cover 4 shell that has corners playing deep off coverage.

Best called on second and medium to long or any first down situation where defenses expect run out of the Tight Slots personnel look.

Pair this with HB Mid Draw or Mtn Inside Zone earlier in a drive to get linebackers biting on run fakes, then hit them with PA Seam once they start creeping up.
