Your primary read progression starts with the flat to curl combo, then works to the spot runner sitting down in the hole, and finally to the backside dig if the curl and flat are taken away.

Defensive Reads

Watch for the flat defender pre snap, since if the corner or linebacker is sitting inside at depth it signals zone coverage and the spot sitter will have a soft window underneath. Key the middle linebacker depth after the snap, because a shallow drop means the spot route gets taken away and you need to reset to the corner route or backside dig immediately. Identify Cover 3 by the single high safety and three deep defenders rotating over the top, which opens the flat and curl combo since the underneath zone defenders are outnumbered by the route concept. Look for a lurking linebacker sitting in the shallow hook zone reading the quarterback's eyes, since a user controlled defender can jump the spot route and turn it into a pick six if you stare it down. Recognize press man coverage on the outside receiver running the corner route, which tells you to trust the backside dig or shallow route as your quicker answer instead of forcing the ball deep.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment pre snap to identify two high shells versus single high, since Spot Salem thrives against Cover 2 and Cover 3 where the flat defender has to choose between the flat route and the spot sitter. If you see man coverage indicators like corners pressed on the outside receivers, hot route the backside dig into a shallow cross or slant to speed up the man beater option. Use this on early downs like first and second and ten to keep the defense honest, then sequence into Curl Outs or Stick from the same set so the pre snap look stays identical and the defense cannot jump the route combination. Against aggressive user blitzers, check the flat route first since the sit down spot route can get grounded if a linebacker sits directly under it. Pair Spot Salem with HB Draw or HB Mid Draw out of the same personnel to keep defenses guessing when they see the same shotgun alignment.
