Breakdown

PA X Clown is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Tight Slots that sells inside zone action before attacking the deep middle and clearing out the boundary. The play-fake pulls the linebackers up, then the backside receiver runs a deep post/crosser (red route) that stretches across the field over the top of the coverage, while the outside receiver on that side clears vertically. On the other side, the slot receiver runs a deep dig that breaks back across the middle (yellow route) underneath the post, and both outside receivers on that side release on go routes to clear the sideline and hold the corners deep. The primary read progression starts with the deep crossing post for the big play, then works down to the underneath dig as the check down against a soft zone shell.

Defensive Reads

Watch the middle linebacker at the snap: if he bites hard on the play fake, the crossing post will have a clean throwing lane behind him. Identify single high safety coverage pre-snap since the deep dig has room to sit down in the void vacated by the safety rotating over the top. Key the corners on the clear-out side, aggressive press corners jumping routes early open up quick underneath throws once you hot route the outside receivers. Look for user linebackers spying the crosser or sitting in a lurk technique in the middle of the field, since that defender can undercut both the post and the dig if he reads play action fast. Beware of two deep safety shells with sound zone drops underneath, this combination forces you to check down quickly since both shot routes will be squeezed.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or second and short to sell the run fake convincingly and freeze the linebackers before the shot routes develop.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, prioritize the dig route since the post will be capped by help.

Against single high looks or run blitz alignments, trust the play fake to hold the box and hit the post for a explosive gain over the top.

Hot route the clear-out go routes into hitches or comeback routes if you see press man corners jumping the snap, giving you a quicker outlet.
