PA Slide is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Tight Slots that sells a run fake before attacking downfield with a two man route combo on the play side. Off the fake, one receiver runs a deep corner route to the outer third while the other releases vertically on a seam that breaks into a deep out, stacking the two levels to stress a single deflender. The backside receiver runs a shallow drag across the field as a checkdown against blitz or man coverage, while the line slides protection to sell the run action and pick up any late pressure. The primary read progresses from the deep corner route to the underneath seam breaking out, then down to the shallow drag if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage without safety help over the top is the worst matchup for this play, since the corner route will win most one on one reps against trailing defenders. Cover 3 with a single high safety leaves a soft spot for the deep out breaking underneath the corner route, look for the flat defender to widen with the run fake before working the out. Watch the play side linebacker depth at the snap, if he steps up hard on the play action fake the shallow drag will be wide open behind him. Blitz heavy fronts can disrupt this play if the offensive line loses the slide protection battle, so track edge pressure and be ready to hit the drag route early as a checkdown. Cover 2 shells with deep half safeties can squeeze the corner route, so if you see two safeties rotate toward the play side, prioritize the underneath seam to out read instead.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs when the defense is showing run support or crashing linebackers, since the play action fake holds them longer and opens the deep shot. Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties the corner route has a better chance to sit in the open void behind the cornerback. Hot route the shallow drag receiver into a quick out if you are facing aggressive man coverage with no help underneath, this gives you a faster release against a jam. Pair this play with Mtn PA Slide or PA Seam from the same set to keep the defense guessing between the deep shot and the quicker seam read, since both start with a similar run action look. Save this call for second and short or first and ten situations where run action is believable, since PA Slide loses value against defenses that key on obvious pass downs.
