Breakdown

Bench out of Shotgun Tight Slots is a classic sideline flood concept built to attack zone coverage. Both outside receivers run bench routes, sitting down at the sticks and breaking outward toward the numbers, while the backside receiver runs a deep corner-breaking route to clear out the top of the defense. The inside receiver runs a vertical seam to hold linebackers and safeties, creating a two level stretch on each side of the field with the QB progressing from the near side bench route to the deep clear out route if the underneath defender jumps the flat.

Defensive Reads

Look for two high safeties presnap, which usually signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 and opens up the bench route sitting underneath the deep corner clear out. If the cornerback is playing tight man with no safety help over the top, expect the corner route to win versus press man coverage. Watch the flat defender post snap: if he jumps the bench route immediately, the corner route behind him should be open for a big gain. Cover 3 with a hard sinking corner and a flat defender squeezing the numbers can take away both routes on that side, forcing the quarterback to work the backside seam or opposite bench route. Beware of user controlled linebackers or safeties sitting in the bench route window, since that lurk threat is the primary way this concept gets picked off in competitive play.

Usage Tips

Call this on third and medium to third and long when defenses show off man coverage or a two high shell, since the bench routes settle right into the soft spot against zone drops. Presnap, identify if a cornerback is playing outside leverage: if so, hot route the bench route to a speed out or slant to beat man coverage underneath. Use the seam route as a check option against Cover 3 if the flat defender sinks under the bench route. Pair this with Stick or Curl Outs on early downs to set up the same read pattern and keep the defense guessing between quick game and the sideline stretch. Against heavy blitz looks, motion the inside receiver to check for man coverage before the snap and be ready to throw the bench route in rhythm to beat pressure.
