On the backside, the receiver runs a deep corner route while the tight end works an underneath crossing route into the middle of the field, and the running back releases outside on a whip route out of the backfield. This is a Cover 4 beater built to stress the seams and flood one side, with the primary read progression starting on the drive route underneath, working to the switch vertical release, then coming back to the backside corner or the backfield outlet if the initial reads are covered.

Defensive Reads

Read the safety alignment presnap, if you see two deep safeties split evenly it likely confirms Cover 4 or Cover 2, which this concept is designed to exploit through the switch release seams. Watch the flat defender or corner responsible for the switch release, if he sits low and squatty he takes away the drive route but opens the vertical release behind him. Key the middle linebacker or nickel defender on the tight end crossing route, a slow trigger from him leaves a window for the quarterback to hit the underneath crosser quickly. Man coverage with underneath help shuts this down fast, since the switch release can get picked off by a trailing defender if the receivers do not sell their releases convincingly. Pair this play with Switch Dig or Mesh Switch in your play calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the underneath crossers and the switch releases, making it harder for linebackers to jump the drive route.

Best called on early down and medium distance situations where you want a explosive shot off the switch release but still have a checkdown to the running back on the whip route if the coverage rotates hard to the switch side.
