Defensive Reads
Watch for a single high safety shell pre-snap, since Cover 1 or Cover 3 with man principles underneath gets exposed by the mesh traffic and rub concept. Key the linebacker depth at the snap, because linebackers sitting shallow in a hook zone can undercut the mesh crossers if they read quarterback eyes quickly. Identify if the defense rolls to Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells, since those zone shells with underneath zone defenders squeezing the crossers will make the mesh concept harder to complete and force a checkdown to the swing. Watch the flat defender or curl-flat player, because a disciplined zone defender sitting on the swing route can jump the checkdown and blow up the easy completion. If you see a nano blitz or overload pressure look pre-snap, get the ball out fast to the swing or the shallow drag before the mesh routes have time to develop against a collapsing pocket.
Usage Tips
Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap like press corners or a single high safety, since the mesh concept thrives when defenders have to navigate traffic in man-to-man. Use motion out of the bunch to identify if the defense is playing man (defender follows the motion) or zone (defender stays put), which tells you whether to trust the mesh or lean on the swing. Hot route the HB swing into a check release if you expect a heavy blitz look, giving your quarterback a faster answer against six or seven man pressure. This play works best on early downs or second and medium when you have time to let the mesh develop, since the crossers take a beat to clear the shallow depth.
