Mtn Y-Option lines up out of Shotgun Bunch Spread Nasty with a tight bunch to one side. At the snap the inside bunch receiver runs an option route out of the backfield area, breaking off his stem based on the leverage of the underneath defender, while the two outside bunch receivers stack a deep out and a corner/flag combo to clear the sideline. On the backside, the single receiver runs a deep drift across the field as a coverage-clearing route. This is a man beater at its core, since the option route can settle or break away from a trailing defender, and the primary read progression starts with the Y option in the flat area before working out to the flag and backside drift if the linebacker sits on the shallow break.

Defensive Reads

Watch the alignment of the defender over the Y receiver in the bunch before the snap, tight inside leverage suggests he expects an inside option break. Key the flow of the linebacker or nickel defender at the snap, if he sinks with the option route it opens up the flag route behind him. Against zone coverage, track the deep safety rotation, a single high safety leaves the corner route from the bunch vulnerable in the void behind underneath defenders. Usage Tips

Presnap, identify whether the defender over the bunch Y is playing inside or outside leverage, since that dictates which way the option route will break. If you see man coverage with no safety help over the bunch, throw the Y option quickly before the defense can rally. Against zone shells, especially Cover 3 or Cover 4, look to the corner route from the outside bunch receiver since it will settle behind the underneath zone drop into the void created by the deep drift route. Use hot routes to convert the backside drift into a hot read if the defense shows heavy blitz looks off the edge.
