Cheat Flood is a flood concept out of the Shotgun Bunch Spread Nasty formation, sending three receivers into the same third of the field to overload a Cover 3 defender. Off the bunch, one receiver runs a deep vertical clearing route, another runs a corner route that sits behind the flood, and the flooding receiver from the backside motion man works underneath from the boundary to the sideline. On the field side, the outside receiver runs a deep dig/square-in that squares off at depth, the middle receiver runs a flat route to the numbers, and the third receiver pushes vertically up the seam before settling, creating a high-low-flood read for the quarterback. This is a Cover 3 beater built to attack the flat defender and curl-to-flat zone dropper, with the primary read progressing from the deep out breaking route to the underneath flat, working horizontally to vertically based on the flow of the zone defender.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender and curl-to-flat defender pre-snap, if they are shaded to the flood side with depth, this signals Cover 3 or Cover 4 that the flood concept is designed to attack. Post-snap, track whether the underneath zone defender sinks with the deep square-in or stays flat, since that decision opens either the flat route or the deep breaking route. User-controlled defenders sitting in a deep third or playing lurk over the middle can jump the deep square-in route, so be ready to check down to the flat or the backside vertical clear-out. This play struggles against man coverage with press corners since the flood routes take time to develop, making it vulnerable to a well-timed man blitz or nano blitz off the edge. Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties can squeeze the corner route and flood combo, so look for the safety rotation pre-snap to decide whether to trust the flood or check to a different concept in the set.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion to identify if the defense shifts into man or stays put, since a lack of adjustment often signals zone coverage that this flood is designed to exploit.

Key on the flat defender and curl-to-flat player after the snap, if that defender sits on the flat route, hit the deep square-in behind him for an explosive gain.

This play works best on second and medium or third and long situations against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells where the flood can outnumber zone defenders to one side.

Pair Cheat Flood with Cheat Slot Cross in your play-calling sequence, since both plays start from the same bunch look but attack different levels, keeping defenders guessing on shell recognition.

If the cornerback on the flood side presses at the line, hot route the underneath flat man into a quick out or slant to beat man coverage before the flood routes fully develop.
