Mtn Slot Cross runs out of Bunch Spread Nasty with a deep crosser working from the bunch side all the way across the field, a dig sitting underneath it in the middle of the field, and an outside receiver breaking on a shallow out at the boundary. The backside blocking (X and RB near the line) sets up protection to hold up the edge, confirming this is a straight drop back pass concept rather than play-action or RPO. This is primarily a man beater since the deep crosser stresses man defenders with traffic through the bunch and picks, though the dig underneath gives you a answer versus zone drops if the crosser is taken away. Progression is deep crosser first, working back to the underneath dig, and finally the shallow out as the checkdown or hot route versus pressure.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a linebacker or slot defender sinking into the crosser's lane, since that lurk threat is the biggest danger to this concept and often the user-controlled defender jumping the route. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed hard by the deep crosser, especially if the bunch alignment creates natural traffic for the defender trailing across. Cover 3 with a deep middle defender sitting on the crosser will bait you into the underneath dig, so read the middle third defender's depth before committing. If the defense shows a nano blitz or fast interior pressure look pre-snap, expect the shallow out to be your answer since the crosser needs time to fully develop. Zone defenses that widen their curl-flat defenders can be undercut on the shallow out route, but tight zone drops that stay disciplined underneath will force you back to the deep crosser.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or second and medium when you have time to let the deep crosser develop across the field since it takes several seconds to clear traffic.
Check pre-snap for man coverage indicators like safeties rotating late or corners lined up tight on the bunch, since the crosser exploits any natural pick from the bunch alignment.
If you see a Cover 2 or Cover 3 shell, focus your eyes on the underneath dig instead of forcing the crosser into a deep zone defender sitting over the top.
Hot route the shallow out receiver into a quick hitch or slant against blitz-heavy fronts to give yourself a faster outlet if the crosser gets picked up late.
