Breakdown

Orbit Shallow Cross lines up out of a bunch look in Shotgun with a pre-snap orbit motion man crossing behind the backfield before the snap. At the snap the shallow crosser sits underneath, a deep crosser works from the opposite bunch receiver across the field, a corner route from the third bunch receiver clears out vertically to the flag, and the backfield receiver runs a flat route as a checkdown outlet. This is a man beater that also stresses zone defenders horizontally, with the shallow drag serving as the primary read against man coverage and the deep crosser as the answer versus zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Watch how the defense reacts to the orbit motion pre-snap, a defender running with the motion man across the formation signals man coverage and opens up the shallow drag as a layup throw. If the defense stays put and shifts zone shells instead, expect underneath defenders to widen with the flat route, which opens throwing lanes for the deep crosser working across the middle. Be alert for a user controlled linebacker sitting in a lurk spot over the shallow cross, since that defender can jump the underneath throw if the quarterback stares it down too long. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can squeeze the flat route and shallow drag into a crowded window, so identify single high safety looks pre-snap and lean on the corner route or deep crosser instead. Blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge can be countered by the quick developing shallow route, so if you see a nano blitz alignment pre-snap, get the ball out fast to the shallow crosser or flat route before pressure arrives.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the ball is even snapped, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you know you are getting man coverage. Against man coverage, key the shallow drag first since it creates immediate rub traffic off the bunch alignment and forces a pick or a blown assignment. Against zone shells, work the deep crosser as your primary since it settles into soft spots vacated by underneath zone defenders sliding to the flat route. Call this on early downs or third and medium since the shallow cross develops quickly and gives you a built in checkdown to the flat route if the crossers are covered. Pair this with Orbit Fork Whip or Mtn Slot Cross in the same set to keep the same bunch alignment and motion look while changing the route distribution, forcing defenders to guess based on the pre-snap picture alone.
