Z Swirl Choice is a bunch spread pass concept out of Shotgun that attacks the field with a choice route from the outside receiver in the bunch, a deep corner from the middle bunch receiver breaking outside, and an out and up read from the third bunch man that settles into a hitch or continues vertically. The single back releases out of the backfield on a wide swing to the flat, giving the quarterback a built in check down against pressure or aggressive zone drops. This is primarily a man beater thanks to the natural rub created by the tight bunch alignment, though the choice route also gives a natural answer versus soft zone by sitting down in space. Primary read starts with the choice route working underneath, then progresses to the deep corner breaking to the sideline, with the HB swing as the built in outlet.

Defensive Reads

Check pre snap safety depth, two high shells invite the choice route to settle underneath while single high alignments open up the deep corner route Watch for a nickel or slot corner sitting on the choice route, which signals man coverage and means the corner breaking outside should be the priority throw Key the flow of the linebackers toward the swing route, aggressive linebacker fills mean the choice route will have a soft spot in the middle of the field User controlled defenders lurking in the shallow zone can jump the choice route, so quarterbacks should have eyes ready to reset to the corner or checkdown Cover 3 with a hard rotating corner to the flat can undercut the choice route, so recognize the rotation post snap and hold the ball for the deep corner instead

Against zone shells with deep safeties, look to the choice route settling into the open window rather than forcing the corner route into coverage

Pair this call with Mtn Cross HB Choice or Orbit Bunch Salem earlier in a series so the defense has to respect multiple bunch releases and cannot sit on the choice concept

Best used on second and medium or third and short since the choice route gives the quarterback a quick answer against both blitz and coverage rotation
