Mtn Drive HB Trail is a Cover 4 beater out of Bunch Spread Nasty that combines a classic Drive concept with a trailing HB route out of the backfield. The bunch alignment sends the outside receiver on a deep dig that settles across the middle (red), while the second receiver runs the shallow drive route underneath sitting at the sticks (gold), and the third receiver clears out on a deep corner or wheel to stretch the safety (gold arrow). The HB releases from the backfield on a trail route working underneath the crossers (blue), giving the quarterback a layered read from deep to shallow. Primary progression starts with the dig against the seam, works down to the drive/shallow crosser, and checks down to the HB trail as the safety valve against zone drops or blitz pressure.

Defensive Reads

Read the flow of the linebackers at the snap, if they crash down on the shallow drive route the dig will come open behind them in the void. Watch for a lurking user defender sitting in the middle of the field, this play is vulnerable to a spy or rat in the box jumping the dig route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Identify Cover 4 shells pre-snap by checking corner depth and safety width, this play is designed to attack quarter-quarter-half zones by settling the dig in the seam between the safety and corner. Man coverage with underneath help can take away the HB trail quickly, so if you see press corners and a linebacker sitting flat footed in the backfield area, expect the checkdown to be contested. Blitz-heavy fronts with man coverage on the outside are where this play struggles most, since the trail route needs time to develop and the dig requires the quarterback to hold the ball through traffic.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep this dig and drive combo will pull the underneath defenders and open the crosser for an easy pitch and catch.

Use motion out of the bunch to identify man versus zone, if a defender follows the motion man across the formation you know you are getting man coverage and can attack with the dig on a rub.

Hot route the clear out receiver to a deep post if you are facing single high safety looks, this forces the free safety to widen and opens up the middle of the field for the dig.

Pair this play with Mtn Mesh Drive or Mtn Slot Cross in your call sheet so the defense sees similar route stems out of bunch and has to guess between mesh and trail concepts.

Best used on second and medium to second and long where the sticks route and dig combo give the quarterback multiple options to move the chains without needing an explosive gain.
