Seam Divide is a bunch based dropback pass out of Shotgun Bunch Spread Nasty that attacks the middle of the field with a vertical seam and a divide concept off the bunch. The bunch releases into a deep seam straight up the hash, a corner route breaking outside at the top of the numbers, and a deep crossing route working from the bunch all the way across the field, while the backside X runs an out and the RB releases on a swing/flare check down to the flat. Blocking is a standard 5 man protection with the RB checking release, making this a man beater designed to split the safeties with the divide route while the seam occupies the middle linebacker or the deep safety. Primary read is seam to corner, working to the deep cross if the safety bites on the seam.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage with a Mike linebacker trying to run with the seam route is the easiest matchup to exploit, especially versus Cover 1 or Cover 3 man variants. Watch the deep safety alignment pre snap, if he is shaded toward the bunch side he can jump the seam and corner combo, so be ready to check to the backside out or the deep cross. Post snap, identify any user controlled lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, since he can undercut the seam route if the quarterback holds the ball too long. Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties can squeeze the seam route, so prioritize the corner route breaking to the open grass outside the numbers. Zone blitzes that bring extra rushers off the edge can collapse the pocket quickly, so track the flat and swing release from the RB as an outlet if the seam and corner windows are not there immediately.

Usage Tips

Look for single high safety shells pre snap since the seam route is designed to run right up the pipe past a Mike linebacker who cannot get enough depth in man or zone drop.

If you see two high safeties, key the corner route first because it stresses the safety who has to choose between the seam and the corner breaking outside.

Use the RB swing as your check down against pressure looks, especially when the defense shows a five or six man blitz package pre snap.

Pair this play with Corner Divide or Mtn HB Corner from the same set so the defense has to respect both the seam shot and quick corner combo, keeping safeties honest.

Best called on second and medium or third and long when you need an explosive gain, since the deep cross and seam both threaten chunk yardage over the middle.
